SEN - What a puzzle! Finding ways to support our SEN kids!
My daughter was in year 8 of secondary education before my wife and I noticed Jess' symptoms of dyslexia. From that point on it took a lot of reading around on the internet, trying to understand dyslexia, speaking to our school about how to support Jess and finding a way to unlock resources by getting an assessment of dyslexia for her.
We were lucky. We had the money to pay for the £500 assessment at Dyslexia Action and we were fortunate in that Jess was only showing signs of dyslexia, a little dyscalculia and perhaps a low level of dyspraxia (Click here to find out the difference between these conditions).
With the report from the assessment a simple plan was put together by the school to support Jess because her needs, whilst significant in unlocking her education, were not overly complicated.

In many cases of the diagnosis of dyslexia, the story is a lot more complicated and the pupil involved could well be presenting signs of other conditions such as autism, problems with auditory processing or sensory issues. They might be dyspraxia or have spoken language difficulties and many more. These conditions could all be parts of a puzzle that requires the most appropriate support. As a parent it can be a daunting task to obtain and coordinate the most effective support and could involve a liaison with doctors, teachers, Special Educational Needs Coordinators as well as having the funding to get the right assessments in place.
So I am really pleased to be able to feature on this blog a new conference that I am involved in with special needs tutor, Georgina Smith and speech and language therapist Libby Hill that will be taking part in Staffordshire in July.
The aim of the conference is to help piece together the puzzle about SEN (Special Educational Needs) through a number of talks from SEN specialists as well as finding tools that could be used to help your child through education. There will be a small exhibition of companies supplying relevant services and products to browse around.
